John Clarence Rhodes

John Clarence Rhodes passed away by natural cause on September 24th, 2016, at the age of 92. He was at the Marysville Care Center surrounded by family who dearly loved him at the time of his death.

John was born August 22, 1924 at home in Oakland California. His father Clarence D. Rhodes was born in Elmira, New York and was a Sergeant of Troop C of the Fourth Regiment of Cavalry. His occupation was Newspaper Writer and Illustrator. John’s Mother, Rosa Eva Wolf, was born in Wisconsin. Her occupation was House Maid and Waitress as she loved and cared for her three sons, Jim, John, and Donald, who passed at a young age.

In his early life, John was a Staff Sergeant in the Army. He was in the 54th Fighter Squadron of the United States Army and was awarded a World War II Victory Medal, an Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, an American Campaign Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and attended the University of California Berkeley receiving his BA. John taught school for a several years before following his passion of being an Executive Chef until his retirement.

John had a love of music, the outdoors, and photography. He worked for the Forrest Service in Yosemite, CA, for several years in the 1950’s where he met his wife Marie Gore. They were married in 1960 and had two children, Janine in 1964, and Michael in 1968. John had five grandchildren (Amy, Jessie, Matthew, Makayla, and Brittany) and five Great Grandchildren (Tristan, Connor, Lily, Pearson, and one on the way).

No words can express how deeply John was loved by his family and friends. He was an incredibly caring, loving, and hardworking man. He will be missed by many.
