DeLois "Cookie" Rhodes Obituary

DeLois, better known as “Cookie” to her family and close friends passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at the age of 76. Cookie was born in Memphis, TN to the late L.V. and Mable Harris. She was preceded in death by son, Ricky Rhodes, and sisters, Joyce M. Latham and Alma Faye Harris.

Cookie is survived by ex-husband, Donald Rhodes, two daughters, Erica (Rhodes) Johnson of Waco, TX and Sydney (Rhodes) Franklin of Miami, FL; sisters, Carolyn (Harris) Daniels, Sacramento, CA and Linda (Harris) Barnes, Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Jonathan Marshall, Paige Kirk, Danielle (Kirk) Snyder, Courtney Robinson, Kaitlyn Robinson, Mason Johnson, Ervinique Franklin, and Marcus Johnson; six great grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

In 1960, when she was 18 years old, Cookie moved to Sacramento with her family when LV was transferred to McClellan AFB as a civil servant. In 1963 she met and married Donald while he served in the Air Force. Cookie was blessed to visit several overseas countries such as Turkey, Israel, Scotland, and Japan.

Cookie loved to meet people and never met a stranger, and she loved to entertain. She has friends all over the world. She hosted many get-togethers and cook-outs, and if you came to visit, Cookie could whip up a three-course meal from whatever she may have had in her cupboards and refrigerator and would make sure you were full before you left. As she prepared the meal, her guests were entertained by her vast music collection which included artists such as Silver Convention, Grover Washington, Celine Dion, The O’Jays, other classic R&B artists, and smooth jazz. In addition to her enjoyment of travel and extending hospitality, she was an avid reader. Her library was quite extensive, but her favorite author was Danielle Steele.

In December 2007 Cookie retired from AHTNA Technical Services, Inc., the housekeeping department at the hospital on McClellan AFB after more than 20 years of loyal and dedicated service.

Always a straight shooter, Cookie never left you guessing as to what her opinion was on a matter. This quality would sting at first, but eventually many came to appreciate it because she kept it real. She will truly be missed. We really cherish the time that we had with her, and we’re thankful for the memories.

Growing Pains
As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that was not supposed to ever let us down,
Probably will.
You will have your heart broken and you will break other’s hearts.
You will fight with your best friend or maybe fall in love with them.
And you will cry because time is flying by…
Tell someone what they mean to you and tell someone off!
Speak out loud, dance in the rain, hold someone’s hand, comfort a friend, fall asleep watching the sun come up, stay awake late, be a flirt, and smile until your face hurts.
Life comes with no guarantees, no time outs, no second chances…So take too many pictures, laugh too loud and too much, forgive freely and love like you’ve never been hurt.
Just live to the fullest!

Psalm of David

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
