Matthew D Schreader, born June 19th, 1974 to Duncan and Terri (Jarman) Schreader, was killed on June 25, 2020. He was 46 years old. A loving son; husband; father; and friend, he was a Monterey County native. Known around the peninsula as “Srgt Schultz Schreader” from the 1991 MBL Champs and CCS semi-finals. Go Monterey Hogs! He enjoyed all things coastal from rollerblading up and down the bike path, boogie boarding at Asilomar, to being the youngest docent for the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Best known for his seemingly outlandish, unfathomable, but surprisingly true (or at least mostly true) stories. He had a sharp wit, quick smile, and a movie quote for almost every situation. After graduation in 1992, Matthew moved to Sacramento, CA with long term friend and college sweetheart Kristy L. Schreader (Groel). They were married February 29, 2000. A perfect illustration of Matty’s humor and wit. “Give me any day to pick in 2000 so I know how long we are married and I am going to make sure it is unique. Nothing more unique than the ultimate Leap year!” They were married for 20 years and have three children Devyn, Kyndl, and Logan.
He was an only child who surrounded himself with adopted siblings and had a habit of taking in strays. Whether it was a family of abandoned kittens from the next-door neighbor to “babysit” for a few days that turned into 14 years; a chinchilla returned and living at Petco for 2 years that “deserved better and needed a family”; the young boys down the street that he had walk his daughter home so he could keep an eye on them; or someone needing a shower and a meal or a place to crash for a few days/months. He was even good for a train ticket or two to get home and bring along any significant others that were in need as well. He made sure that those he was close to always had a safe place to return and made sure they knew they could come home at any time for support. No matter what the circumstances, his house was open for anyone in need; no judgment, no questions, just friendly support.
There are many stories that could be told about him. Many he told himself, some by his friends and family, but still, others will remain untold. He will be missed by his family, friends, cousins, and the extended family he made for himself throughout Sacramento and Monterey.
Memorial services will be held in Monterey, CA at a later date. Please continue checking https://www.allfaithcremation.com/send-flowers for updated dates and places. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Donate Life America. Matthew always wanted to be a donor and this is a wonderful way to remember him. He was also a big supporter of the local animal shelters in Sacramento.
