In Memory of Naomi by Kate Iscol (September 2017)

There is “Cher” and “Barbara.”
There was “Elizabeth” and “Richard.”
The world “Michelle” needs neither adjective or full name. i
We will hear the words “Barack” and be inspired to fight for the whole universe.

No descriptions!
No exclamations!

Heroes, artists, do-gooders, rebels become identified by a single word.

If you were very lucky and blessed in life you knew “Naomi!”

No one ever said, or has asked, “Naomi --who?”

An expert of her own magical faces--

Devilish, stony, thoughtful, sweet, generous, a maker of dolls,

a faker of anger meant to taunt and scare--
followed by a grin; if you fell for her act.

Only later for train the good and kindness she doled out
Never letting on that she manned and a food table as a weekly fund-raiser.

She helped to create and donate jackets from scraps and jewels from fabric

Coins flew from her window to supply neighborhood kids with treats.
Her huge lip-kissing so was cheered as a political spoof
Do you remember?

Naomi stayed with us and New York for her last years
Later she shared happiness with her adoring family in California.

Her sisters and relatives were loved by her.

Everyone who knew her has a Naomi memory!
She was life and fun and sharpness and theater
And music and work and beauty and friendship and
Appetite and advice, and the best.

“Naomi!”

To Stacey and family:
Mom and I were enriched by sharing time with one another, growing to learn about relationships, sisterhood, and the meaning of "love" that grew through our friendship.
We were able to give one another encouragement of strength as both of us experienced our illnesses. The greatest experience we learned was to know that God is the author and finisher of life and that he knows our length of days.

Naomi Shelnut was a very special person. Meeting her at the quilting guilds; THE Empire and The QCNY, She sparked so much laughter and shared her skills by showing her beautiful dolls, jackets and cute little purses. I have each garments and will cherish them in her memory. She will be missed. To family and friends, there's a special bond filled with joy and energy that grows in Naomi's memories. The wonderful and caring times you shared with her, her sense of great spirit will keep you smiling, MAYBE!

Knowing Naomi was a blessing and a source of strength. While she served as my executive secretary during my tenure as Vice Chancellor at the City University of New York, she was first and foremost a trusted friend. We shared a passion for doing a personal best and 'being presence in our daughters lives'. Among my papers, I found a letter she had written to my daughter, Jane,. Her updates included "Well, things in the office are quite hectic. Your mother and me are known as the 'Dynamos" of the 7th floor. The load seems unbearable but we manage. If for any reason you may want to shoot the breeze - call me and reverse the charges. It would be nice hearing from you. Well, that's it for now. Keep well and take care.
Sincerely, Naomi S." Her letter is vintage Naomi. She worked hard, gave life her personal best and always reached out with kindness and concern for people she loved and saw as family. I am comforted knowing Stacey was there for her Mom and added to the quality of Naomi's life. With gratitude, peace and love, Dolores Cross and Jane Cross

I knew Naomi as a valued colleague at The City University of New York. Naomi was always friendly, knowledgeable, articulate, warm, helpful and encouraging. She was able to brighten the moment and solve a problem. It always felt good to get Naomi on the telephone. Naomi will continue to be missed.

The first year I met Naomi was through work interactions over the phone. I was a young kid and she was totally intimidating. After that, I came uptown and we worked in the same office with wonderful colleagues--Dennis Cabral, Dolores Cross and the late Leo Corbie. We became and have remained good friends once we met in person. Naomi had a heart of gold. You will be missed. RIP

God bless your hearts. I am comforted knowing Naomi is in the loving arms of her Heavenly sisters. In our pain and grief, we celebrate her great and profound influence over our lives no matter how brief the encounters. I will always remember Naomi as a creative, imaginative fiber artist, full of eagerness to know, learn and make. My condolences to all who love and miss her.
